Things to do in Tel Aviv 26/4-2/5/15

events

The time zone issue in the DIY Tel Aviv app has been fixed, so you can once again rely on it to provide you with accurate event start times. Which is good, as there is a lot going on this week. If you’re into documentaries, you may also want to start thinking ahead to next week, when the Docaviv festival will kick off. You can already book tickets, plus there will be a bunch of free outdoor screenings that will be listed here next week.

Tonight (Sunday)

Tough choice tonight for lovers of female pop duos. SANDR (Shelly and Rotem) play live @ Kuli Alma from 21:30 and you can also catch Reo playing live @ Radio EPGB, also from 21:30. Both events are free.

Tomorrow (Monday)

Tzvika Force Live @ Rothschild 12 from 21:30. Free. Melodic, dramatic alternative pop from the guy with the golden voice.

*

Reggae and dancehall lovers definitely need to head down to Kuli Alma from 19:00, though, because there will be a free screening of Congo Beat the drum, Kalbata and Mixmonster’s brilliant documentary about, you know, that time these two awesome Israeli producers went to Jamaica to make an album with some of the best reggae stars ever. They will also DJ after (with My Lord Sound) and I gather there’s a Q&A session too.

Tuesday

Last chance to enjoy the wandering vintage sale from out of town at Abarbanel 45. From 12:00-17:00. Lots of vintage / 2nd hand stuff, both old and rare and current and new.

*

Case in point, a series of talks by international curators, returns to the CCA at 19:00. The event will be moderated by Jennifer Krasinski with Chris Sharp and Marc-Olivier Wahler talking about fascinating international art projects. 10NIS gets you in.

Wednesday

English language storytelling and poetry slam about little secrets and lies @ Ktovt, an intimate basement bar. Full details here, where you can also sign up to perform.

*

Communal meal @ City Tree from 18:30-19:00ish. It’s a potluck, so bring your own vegan dish to share. If you want to help with the cooking at the place itself, you’re welcome to come from around 18:00ish.

*

Luna Abu Nassar live @ Ozen Bar from 20:00. Beautiful singer-songwriter stuff. 50NIS on the door.

***

Gearing up for the upcoming TLVfest of LGBT cinema, there’s a screening of the film Boys @ the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. More details here.

Thursday

The Solidarity festival of non-violence resistance and art opens. You can head over to the Arab-Jewish theatre in Jaffa from 19:00 for the opening of the Activestills exhibition and see some striking images of Israel in the past year and beyond from an activist and political angle. At 20:00 there will be a multimedia event dealing with torture in Israel. It will involve (I assume) Hebrew recorded torture victim testimonies, but will also include performance, music and video art.

*

New Lindy-hop / swing dance course starts @ Bikurei Haitim. It’s 8 weeks long and you need to sign up in advance. More details and registration at: 050-6885678 / info@holylindyland.com.

Friday

There is apparently a dragon boat festival on the Yarkon river from 9:00 – 13:00 and it’s supported by the Chinese embassy. I’ve not seen much about it apart from on the Facebook event. It’s free to come and watch (they give the address as Rokach 2, so I suppose they kick off somewhere near that part of the Yarkon), but if you want to join a team of rowers to power a boat, you need to pay a fee and sign up. call 03-6990480 (ext 0) for more details.

*

Comikaza, the Dizengoff Centre (Building B, 2nd floor) comic book store, is participating in the global Free Comic Book Day by giving out free comics. Max 2 per person. About 30 to choose from. 9:00 – 15:00.

*

From 11:00 @ Gan Meir there will be a bunch of grown ups meeting up to play games: childhood games, plus ping pong and basketball (there are facilities there). You can join them for free and play all kinds of random stuff.

Saturday

Screening of Bil’in Habibti @ 14:00 at the Cinematheque as part of the Solidarity Festival. It details the non-violent struggle of Bil’in residents and supporters. Subtitled in English.  Tickets are around 20NIS.
