On Thursday the 31st Tel Aviv gets a chance to see Mulatu Astatke, the godfather of Ethio-jazz and the biggest name in Ethiopian music. People who know nothing about Ethiopian jazz and groove may still know his music from Broken Flowers, the Jim Jaramusch movie. He’s playing at the Barby from 21:30 and you can get tickets for 200NIS from Hummus Abu Dubby or online (in Hebrew, but I think there’s a phone line as well) at Misterticket.
So tonight, in readiness for the big event, there’s a night of Ethiopian grooves, oldies and moderns at the Anna Loulou bar. Starts at 21:00 and it’s going to be intimate, loud and busy. You’ll also be able to buy discounted tickets for the gig.
Oh and if you’re quick you may be able to win yourself two tickets to the gig by going to the (Hebrew) blog, Cafe Gibraltar and posting a reply with an embedded Youtube video of some interesting world jazz number.
