The Independent Salon art show – Taboo

Art The Independent Salon was born out of the “Rejects’ Salon”, formed 10 years ago by artists who couldn’t get past the Fresh Paint selection committee. This year, the show deals with all aspects of “taboo” and is set at the new art centre, HaMerkazit, at the old central bus station. It will be followed by a public discussion about the future of the Neve Shaanan neighbourhood, where the centre is located.

The neighbourhood is quite a poor one with all kinds of socioeconomic problems (junkies, sex workers and such, plus clashes between asylum seekers and locals). The people involved in this are well aware of the fact that artists moving to a neighbourhood usually spells the ultimate gentrification of the place and are really trying to be inclusive in their events. The discussion will involve a panel of people representing the diverse groups in the area.
