Israel’s largest annual contemporary art event is hardly underground in itself, but there are plenty of interesting and unusual events and shows happening as part of it. Seeing as just about every influential gallery in the vicinity is participating, plus smaller emerging ones (and emerging artists), you should be able to easily find the weird and wonderful stuff you deserve to see. For a full listings and information about the fair, the location, etc. see the Fresh Paint Website. It’s in the South of Tel Aviv, which already makes it more interesting as far as I’m concerned.
Personally, I’m going to see Ido Shemi’s Demographic Delusions: Israel Landscapes in 3D (a homage to the tacky 3D postcards of the 60s and 70s crossed with neo-patriotism and Israeli daily life weirdness.
I’ll also be lurking somewhere near the Israeli Center for Digital Art offerings, looking at weird video art. More interesting tips and hints as I discover them myself.
