Assuming the police, the council, the army and god decide not to be awkward, the famed Florentin street party is going to happen. Supposedly this year the council has a hand in it, so it might suck ass, but just in case it doesn’t, set your calendars to Sat 20/3 at 20:00 and head to Florentin St between Herzl and Abarbanel ( though I expect there to be a lot of stuff going on all over that area, police permitting). Now, if you’ve never been and don’t know what to expect then expect loads and loads of people from all over the city and beyond, lots of booze, costumes and soundsystems. The bars and cafes all have stuff going on that spills into the street, bakeries stay open late to feed you and people wheel out their speakers onto their balconies and play music all night long. We’ll see whether this party is like that or whether the council manages to make it lame.
To be fair, sometimes the people who come to the Florentin parties are a bit too drunk and annoying and the whole thing is totally not underground and cool. On the other hand, last year it was supposed to rain so a lot of people stayed at home and the party was awesome – not too crowded and composed mostly of people from the neighbourhood and surrounding areas. Here’s hoping for something similar this year.
DIY Tel Aviv reminds you to drink responsibly and not put any rubbish in my bicycle basket as you walk past. Actually, you can drink as much as you want, it’s Purim. Just leave my bicycle alone and don’t piss on my doorstep cause that’s not cool either.
