First, the news: Tel Aviv is having a white party on the 15/4 from 12:00 – 18:00 on Shaul Hamelech, outside the art museum. This is an official, council-supported street party. Wear white, or at the very least something white, as that’s meant to be the point.
Disclaimer: lots of people probably won’t wear white.
Being official, there are a lot of rules: you won’t be able to get animals, glass bottles or bikes into the party perimeter. The good news is that as far as I can tell, plastic bottles are OK, so you may even be able to get your own booze in, if you’re clever.
Another disclaimer: this is a council supported party. The council likes to pretend it’s cool, but the parties it’s involved in are not usually that exciting. Expect it to be a very commercial party with thousands of people, sponsorship banners everywhere and stalls trying to sell you booze and other things for way too much money. Also lots of heavy security. I must admit that it’s not really my cup of tea and I didn’t actually go to the first party in that location that happened over Purim. I’ve had mixed reports – some people said it was very dull, but one person actually enjoyed the beer stalls and the fact that it was more organised than your average street party.
So to go or not to go? The weather will probably be nice and the DJ line up is not bad at all, depending on what you’re into. Afficoman is on the bill and he’s actually very good. Most importantly, the party free, which means you have nothing to lose, as long as you don’t expect it to he be representative of what partying in Tel Aviv is really like.
