If you’re into community gardening, then you might want to get in on the open day / tour of the little community gardening project at Harav Kuk 42. Tomorrow from 14:30-17:00 the volunteers will be showing people around the garden and telling its story. It’s a very small garden, but a really sweet one and well loved. This tour can be the perfect alternative answer to the whole Houses from Within thing happening this week. The place is run by volunteers not just from the neighbourhood it’s in, so if you’re in Tel Aviv for a longer time and want to join in and help them grow stuff then you’re welcome. The tour is free. It might be held in Hebrew, but I’m sure you’ll find someone to translate or at least answer questions. The place itself is close enough to the beach to allow for a stopover on the way to or from the beach

Thursday (tomorrow)

Prop4g4nd4 Exhibition + DJ Karizma (Baltimore, USA) At The Block – The Block’s talented flyer and poster designer is launching an exhibition alongside a book launch celebrating 20 years of Tel Aviv club flyers. Doors for the exhibition open at 22:00 and entry is free. Main event with Karizma and locals Yogo and Avihai Partok starts at midnight and costs 60NIS (40NIS for students, if you can show a student card at the door).

Meanwhile, for a more intimate night, Michatronix are hosting the Wild Bunch for a night of dirty techno (or tech house, you never know here). 23:00 – 7:00, free of charge.

Friday

Miss Kittin at Haoman 17. Go if you really like her but be aware that the sound is never good in that place and it’s always too rammed and too expensive. Buy tickets for 90NIS here or 120NIS on the door.

Kill the Bass rave at the Sublime in Florentin – from bass to dubstep, hip hop, dubstep, glitch hop and much more with some really great local DJs:
KALBATA, SUBMOB CREW, SHEKEL, NASTY HABIT, ORI SHOCHAT, PIPE, VIBES ATTACK CREW.
Starts at midnight goes on till morning, 40NIS before 1:00, more after.

Another one for bass lovers is D-Jahsta from Greece, who’ll be playing at Levontin 7 aided by a bunch of local DJs (Rauch, Lovey, Miss Gosha, Guy Zappa, Obscenity)

And if you like techno, head down to the Volt Club on Carlibach 3 from 22:00 till 6:00 for a night of tribal tech house and friends. Live show by Yostek, DJs Pushtech, Avi Gal, Igor Fridland, Hongi and Itai M.

This isn’t my usual thing, but I’m putting it here as this is for a good cause.

If you like Israeli music then you may be interested to know that tonight there’s a fundraiser on for the Shapira neighbourhood afer school club. Shapira is one of the most neglected neighbourhoods in Tel Aviv and the club helps disadvantaged children with 2 meals a day, activities, emotional support, help with homework, etc.. As this is a charity event, tickets are not cheap at 100NIS each, but you’ll be able to enjoy live music from Beit Habubot and the Giraffot and know you’ve made a real difference to the lives of local kids.

The show is on tonight from 20:00 at the Yehuda & Israel Club, Allenby 34. Doors at 19:00. Please note that the place is a youth club, so there will be no alcohol for sale, but there will be soft drinks and Kosher (dairy) food. This just in – Future Shorts is back in Tel Aviv tomorrow, showing at the Ozen Bar from 20:00. Apart from wicked short films, there will also be music from the ultra-awesome System Ali and Brain Candies. Tickets are 30NIS either on the door (assuming there are any left) or from the Ozen Bar’s website (beware of Hebrew) or, I guess you could go there in person.

They don’t call this city the non-stop city for nothing. Here’s some midweek fun for you at the Deli bar tonight – it’s the monthly Legotek party with Alex K & Lev playing some fine tech house tunes from 23:00 till late. Did I mention that it’s 100% free? It might not be quite as fun as one of their roof parties (not because the music or crowd are any different, but because a bar is never quite as fun as a roof party) but at least it’s at a secret(ish) bar and a cool one at that.

Tomorrow night it’s dinner and a movie night at the Rogatka vegan bar. The documentary film club will be showing “Have you heard from Johannesburg” here is the description of the film:
seven documentary stories, produced and directed by Connie Field, chronicling the history of the global anti-apartheid movement that took on South Africa’s entrenched apartheid regime and its international supporters who considered South Africa an ally in the Cold War.

This will be shown free of charge at the Rogatka bar and for 10NIS you can also enjoy a South African themed vegan dinner. There’ll also be plenty of very cheap booze and a nice, politically conscious crowd. This is a rare opportunity to see this film in Israel as it’s never shown here and you can’t buy or rent copies of it locally. Starts at 20:00. The film is 90 minutes long.

If you’re in any way into architecture, design, city planning and any related fields, then you probably already know about the Houses from Within event taking place this week in Tel Aviv. But just in case you’ve been living under a rock or have just this minute discovered your love for the above, I’m letting you know that from Thurs-Sat this week (17,18,19 May 2012), you’ll be able to join in on free film showings, architecture lectures and tours of interesting spaces in Tel Aviv normally closed to the public. Interestingly enough, these go beyond Bauhaus (which Tel Aviv is usually known for) and the focus is predominantly on Tel Aviv’s lesser known northern neighbourhoods which feature some very interesting buildings. Some events require you to register for tickets in advance, but all are free.

Tomorrow is the global day of action for the 99% and Tel Aviv will be having its own (hopefully) massive demo. The main event will be at Rabin Square. There will be marches coming out of various southern neighbourhoods to meet up and march onto the square. In the square itself from 17:00, there will be discussion circles. At 20:30 there will be music, speeches, etc.. I’m pretty sure the marches start at 17:30. The Florentin one will leave from the corner of Florentin and Washington Blvd.
The demos are generally safe, though recently the police has been arresting more and more people. Generally it’s those with megaphones who are known as “leaders”, so you should be safe just hanging around with the rest of the people.

Tonight

Wolf & Lamb at the Block Club aided by a host of great local DJs. 23:30 – 9:00. Main act not on till probably 3:00 or something, but don’t take my word for it and turn up earlier in case I’m wrong (just be ready for the possibility that you may be waiting a while). Tickets are 80NIS on the door or 75NIS in advance from here if you’re quick.

DJ Zombi tonight at the Michatronix from 22:00 – 7:00. Free entry, tiny venue.

At the Maxim Club there’s an Our Darkness night for all of the nostalgic goths among you, though tonight it’s a Smiths and Morrissey special, so keep that in mind if you’re one of the few who don’t like the Smiths, as you’d be hearing a lot of their stuff all night long. Starts at 23:00 goes on till very late. Tickets 30-50NIS (get there by midnight to get in for 30NIS).

Tomorrow (Friday)

Tel Aviv’s top dupstep night, Kidz Up Late, hosts The Others (UK) at the Comfort 13, alongside a good team of regulars (Nasty Habit, Submob Crew, Ivy, Rauch). 23:30- 5:00ish, entry only 50NIS before 1:00.

Your truly underground option must be Queerefesh at the Rogatka Bar – a night of queer vegan punks and friends with supercheap booze and food, weird performance art, loads of fun music from trash to electronica and loads of random shit including loads of bad singing, as this is apparently the theme. It’s gonna get surreal. Costs only 20NIS (including a free cocktail if you get there early) and all proceeds will go to the refugee kindergarten in Shapira that got burnt down recently in a hate crime firebombing incident.

There’s also a fun girls’ party at Zizi with an all female DJ team playing tech-house and house of various types. Headliner is Elena Hunt. Tickets 60NIS on the door, unless you hit attending on their event page then it’s 50NIS. 23:00 – late.
